Ten exposure steps instead of five is the reason to pick this one for a room you cannot control. Fluorescent tubes overhead, a window on one side and a sheet of white copy paper underneath are exactly the conditions that need fine adjustment. The multi-joint arm folds down to about 3.5 x 4.3 x 17.3 in and weighs around 0.8 kg, so it travels between rooms in a bag.

Autofocus does one job well and one job badly. It handles a flat page without being asked, and it wanders when a hand passes through the frame or when two surfaces sit at different heights. Setting focus yourself removes that behaviour. For repair work or a layered model, that control is worth the extra step at setup.

All three connect over USB 2.0 and none has an HDMI socket. Every model reaches A3 coverage, so the choice comes down to resolution, how focus is handled, and whether the arm bends or folds.
5MP or 8MP
5MP is enough when
Your subjects are worksheets, handwriting, open books and ordinary demonstrations, and the audience watches on a laptop screen or a normal classroom display. At 2594 x 1944 those things are legible with room to spare.
The PA-800 keeps everything else that makes a document camera useful: autofocus, A3 coverage, three LED levels, exposure adjustment and a gooseneck that holds any position. Nothing on that list is a resolution feature.
Go to 8MP when
Someone will need to look closely at part of the picture. Small print in a textbook, the fine lines of a technical drawing, the markings on a component, the texture of a specimen. 3264 x 2448 holds more of that detail before the image gets stretched across a large screen.
A large room pushes the same way. Projecting onto a 75 inch display or a smartboard enlarges every flaw in the source, and the extra pixels give you something to enlarge.
Neither number rescues a badly lit or badly focused shot. A 5MP camera positioned close over a well lit page will beat an 8MP camera hovering at full A3 height every time, because framing decides how many pixels land on the thing you actually want people to read.
What People Put Under the Lens
Teaching a class in person
Put the worksheet under the lens and work through it by hand while the class watches the same page on the board. Students see the order of the steps, not a finished answer that appears on a slide. A book goes under there too, with no scanning beforehand, and so does a student’s own work when it is worth showing to the room.
Online lessons and tutoring
Zoom, Google Meet and Teams treat the camera as an ordinary video source, so a remote student sees your pen moving across the paper in real time. Switch the app back to your laptop camera when the lesson returns to discussion, or swing the Pakotoo arm around and keep using the one device.
Proctored online exams
Several online degree programs require a second camera that shows your desk and the room during a proctored test, and a built-in laptop webcam cannot point at both. A document camera on an adjustable arm does. Check the specification your program publishes before ordering, because the requirements differ between schools and testing providers.
Video calls at monitor height
Raise the arm until the lens sits level with the middle of your screen and you stop appearing to look away from whoever you are talking to. The camera takes up a fraction of the desk a tripod webcam needs, and the LED fills in a face lit only by a monitor.
Recording and OBS
OBS reads the camera as a standard USB source, so the overhead view can sit in a scene next to screen capture, slides or a second camera. Pakotoo supplies the picture. Layouts, overlays, cropping and scene switching happen in the software, which is the part people sometimes expect the hardware to do.
Showing an object, not a photo of one
A science sample, a coin, a seedling, a mechanical part, a knitting stitch halfway through. Anything that fits under the lens and can be focused will show, and the audience watches your hands do the work rather than seeing the result afterwards. Move the camera closer for a small part and higher for a whole experiment.
Setting One Up Takes About a Minute
Plug it into the computer
The camera runs over USB 2.0 and draws its power from the same cable. A USB-C adapter comes in the box for machines without a rectangular USB-A port, including USB-C MacBooks. No Pakotoo driver has to be installed for ordinary use.
Choose it in the app
This is the step people miss. Windows, macOS and most conferencing apps keep using the built-in webcam until you tell them otherwise. Open the video settings in Zoom, Meet, Teams or OBS and pick the USB camera from the list. If nothing appears, check that the app has camera permission in the operating system.
Aim, light and focus
Frame the part that matters instead of the whole desk, then focus. On the PA-800 and KB700 that means pressing AF once. On the manual-focus model, adjust until the surface you care about is sharp. Refocus whenever you change the height or swap a flat page for a thicker object.

What These Cameras Do Not Do
It does not plug into a projector
There is no HDMI output on these models. The computer sits in the middle. One USB cable carries the picture into the machine, and the machine reaches the screen using the display connection it already has. What lands on the wall is your desktop with the camera window open on it, which is also how the same view can be recorded or sent to a remote class at the same moment. Anyone specifically after a standalone visualizer that plugs straight into a projector needs different hardware.
It does not run from an iPad or a phone
These are computer cameras. A USB-C connector on both ends does not by itself make two devices compatible, because the receiving device still has to support an external camera the way a desktop operating system does. Plan on a Windows PC, a Mac, a Chromebook or a supported Linux machine.
It is not a flatbed scanner
For archiving a stack of paper, a scanner wins. It holds the page flat, lights it identically every time and produces a repeatable file. A document camera gives you a live picture instead, which is the right tool for teaching, demonstrating and conferencing but the wrong one for a digitizing project.
There is no optical zoom
Getting closer to the subject is how you fill the frame. Enlarging a small section of the image afterwards spreads the same pixels over more screen and softens the detail you were trying to see. Lowering the camera 4 inches usually beats any zoom control in the software.
Most disappointed buyers in this category wanted one of the four things above. Reading this section before ordering saves a return, and it is the reason it sits here instead of at the bottom of the FAQ.
Getting a Clearer Picture
The LED and the exposure control are not the same knob
The LED adds light to the subject. Exposure changes how bright the camera renders whatever light is already there. When a page looks dim, raise the LED. When the whole image looks washed out or murky, change exposure instead. Pushing both to maximum is the usual reason white paper turns into a featureless glare.
Frame tight, not wide
A3 coverage is a ceiling rather than a default. An 8MP sensor aimed at the entire A3 area spends far fewer pixels on one word than the same sensor positioned over just that word. For small handwriting or a tiny component, come down close and let the subject fill the frame.
Glossy pages need a different angle, not more light
Coated textbook paper and laminated cards bounce the LED straight back into the lens. Turning the LED up makes the hotspot worse. Tilt the camera a few degrees, shift the page, or work off softer room light and drop the LED a level.
Fix the orientation at the camera
When text arrives backwards or upside down, use the flip controls on the camera body rather than a setting inside one app. Correcting it in hardware means the feed stays right when you move between Zoom, OBS and a recording tool. Worth checking first: many apps mirror your own preview while sending the correct image to everyone else.

Yes. Current Pakotoo document cameras are designed for A3 and A4 material. The KB700 covers a maximum area of approximately 16.5 x 11.6 inches, which corresponds closely to A3 size. A larger A3 working area also helps when presenting smaller documents, because an A4 or US Letter page can sit beneath the camera with additional room for writing, rulers, manipulatives or other demonstration materials.
Current Pakotoo USB document cameras support Windows, macOS and ChromeOS, with Linux support also listed for current models. The computer must support a standard USB camera input. After connecting the camera, the computer or conferencing application may continue using its built-in webcam, so select the external USB camera manually in the application video settings if the Pakotoo image does not appear automatically.
Dedicated Pakotoo software is not normally required. The camera connects through USB and works as a camera source inside compatible operating systems and applications. This does not mean the correct camera will always be selected automatically. In Zoom, Google Meet, OBS, Microsoft Teams or another application, open the video settings and select the Pakotoo or USB camera source when necessary.
No. The current Pakotoo USB document cameras do not provide direct HDMI output to a projector. The normal setup is Pakotoo camera to computer by USB, then computer to projector through the computer display connection. This allows the same live image to appear on a classroom screen and also be recorded or shared through conferencing software.
The current models are designed for computers and are not intended for direct use with iPads or smartphones. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee compatibility, because the receiving device must also support the camera correctly. The PA-800 and KB700 use button-activated autofocus, so you press the AF button after changing camera height, replacing the subject, or moving from a flat document to a thicker object. The newer 8MP model uses manual focus. Manual adjustment requires more input from the presenter but provides direct control when several surfaces sit at different distances from the lens.
The built-in LED adds light directly to the work area. Exposure control changes how bright the captured image appears. They solve different problems: increase the LED level when the subject itself is poorly illuminated, and adjust exposure when the overall camera image is too dark or bright. The PA-800 offers three LED levels and five exposure levels, and the KB700 provides three LED levels with up to ten exposure settings. Maximum brightness is not always the best setting, because glossy pages can reflect the LED and white paper can lose visible detail when it is overexposed.
Yes. Pakotoo includes hardware image-orientation controls on its current document cameras. The KB700 can reverse the image horizontally and vertically. The current 8MP model also supports image inversion, and the PA-800 provides horizontal mirroring control. These controls are useful after rotating the camera arm or when an application displays the camera feed in an inconvenient orientation. Keep in mind that some video applications mirror only the presenter local preview, so check what the audience actually sees before correcting an image that may already be transmitted normally.
